With the support of the regional association TanzSzene Bremen, we are resuming our well-established format, the TANZSALON.

 

As before, it will take place on the 10th of every month at 8:00 pm at TAFI – regardless of which day of the week the 10th falls on.

 

Many of you have told us how much you missed the TANZSALON as a place of encounter and exchange within Bremen’s dance scene. Since the last time, quite a lot has happened – at TAFI, but surely also with you: new productions, new films, new guests.

 

We warmly invite you to celebrate the first TANZSALON after the long break with us. The evening’s theme will be TAFI’s latest documentary: “Vulnerably Beautiful. Dance between Elegance and Risk – A Study by Goethe University Frankfurt.”

 

The film accompanies a medical study on physical strain in professional dance. Prof. Dr. Dr. Eileen Wanke of Goethe University Frankfurt, head of the research project, will introduce the topic.

 

Drinks will be provided – just bring yourselves, and feel free to bring along new people and friends.

The public working session of the Film AV & Media DACH working group, which is taking place as part of BiblioCon in Bremen, is dedicated to these questions.

 

Under the title ‘AI in Film and Media’, experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland will come together to discuss the latest developments. The programme includes contributions from the Film Institute Hanover, the FID Media (formerly FID Film, Media and Communication Science / MediaRep) and the AV-Portal of the TIB Hanover – supplemented by insights into local institutions and projects.

 

A special highlight of the programme is a visit to the German Dance Film Institute Bremen, the world’s largest archive for dance film. The tour will provide an insight into the combination of decades of archive practice with new digital and AI-supported perspectives.

 

The session is open to the public and invites all interested parties – for information, discussion and networking at the interface of media studies, practice and technology.

Can a body over 50 still dance? And if so, how? This guest lecture deals with this question.

 

Susan Barnett, dancer and dance teacher from Bremen, was invited to give this lecture. Barnett comes from Wales, has danced internationally – including with the Ballet Municipal de Santiago and in Hans Kresnik’s ensemble – and has been a freelance dancer for many years. With a Master’s degree in Dance Science and a wide range of projects between stage art, dance education and community dance, she deals intensively with the topics of body, age and expression.

 

In professional dance in particular, age often seems to be a criterion for exclusion. While mature artists and (fewer) female artists are still on stage in film and theatre, professional dancers often disappear from the limelight at an early age. What are the reasons for this? Is it an outdated ideal of eternal youth, agility and peak physical performance?

 

But dance can do more. Mobility, joie de vivre, expression – all of this can be maintained and even enhanced into old age.

This guest lecture ‘Age on Stage’ therefore focussed not only on the question of health benefits, but above all on artistic perspectives:

Is getting older on the dance stage really a taboo?
What new forms of expression emerge when the body emphasises qualities other than bounce and speed?
And how can images of age be shifted in art?

 

‘Age on Stage’ is an invitation to rethink dance: not as a privilege of youth, but as a lifelong form of movement and expression.

As part of the event ‘Dance – Excursions into the inner world of dance’, we welcome Prof. Dr Dr Eileen Wanke from the Institute for Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine at Goethe University Frankfurt as a special guest.

 

Prof. Wanke is leading a research project to analyse movement patterns in professional stage dance. State-of-the-art kinematic methods are used to scientifically analyse stresses and risks for dancers – work that opens up new perspectives on prevention and health promotion in dance.

 

Where does art end, where does medicine begin? In her lecture ‘From dance to dance medicine’, Prof. Dr Dr Eileen M. Wanke sheds light on the development of dance from an elementary human form of movement to a profession with special physical requirements – and the emergence of dance medicine as an independent interdisciplinary field.

 

Using historical examples, Prof Wanke shows how dance has always been used to maintain health. At the same time, she outlines the specific stresses and risks that professional dancers are exposed to as part of their training and profession.

 

The focus is on the question: How can medical knowledge help to prevent injuries, maintain performance and ensure the long-term health of dancers?

 

A lecture with film contribution between dance art and science – understandable, practical and with a view to current research results.

Heide-Marie Härtel offers a seminar on the history of dance for students of the Orot Israel College in Tel Aviv via live stream from the studio in Bremen. The seminar on modern dance history will be broadcast from the studio at the German Dance Film Institute in Bremen – via live stream.
The focus of the seminar is particularly on the relationship between dance and politics. Important chroeographers include Kurt Joos, Hans Kresnik, Susanne Linke and Reinhild Hoffmann. In the live stream, Härtel can have film excerpts played from the rich film material of the in-house archive. The students discuss and reflect on the basis of specifically selected historical film examples with their lecturer, Professor Henrietta Horn in Essen, with Heide-Marie Härtel and invited guests, such as Reinhild Hoffmann, in Bremen.

This seminar is realised in close cooperation with the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen-Werden and Professor Henrietta Horn.

“The Bremen archives present treasures from their holdings: Letters, photos, films, interviews, long-playing records, posters, radio recordings, telegrams and a wide variety of exhibits on the subject of “communication”. The spectrum ranges from the US station AFN, church radio and campus radio to the artist and musician John Cage, Werder TV and satellites in space travel. As in a kaleidoscope, a multi-faceted picture of the technical, social or linguistic changes in our communication over the past 100 to 200 years emerges.

 

The exhibition takes a special look at the cultural heritage of the city and state of Bremen. It is complemented by supra-regional and international themes. The preservation and making available of cultural assets are among the essential tasks of the diverse and multi-layered archive landscape in the federal state of Bremen.

In this context, the Bremen Archives Working Group also includes initiatives and collections whose holdings and professional content have hardly been noticed and dealt with by academic institutions. The exhibition is thus also an offer for new ideas and plans.”

“Dance and Film – Symbiosis of Two Genres” is the title of the exhibition contribution by the German Dance Film Institute Bremen. Heide-Marie Härtel’s contribution on the origins and development of dance film and the interpenetration of dance and film is illustrated by photos, film clips and historical costumes as well as film equipment from the extensive holdings of our producing archive.

DANCE – Archive – FILM. Lecture for NaturKultur e.V. Erasmus +

“The stage is yours!” is a theatre-film seminar organised by NaturKultur e.V., where young adults from Europe visiting northern Germany for a voluntary cultural year can gain a variety of experiences. 36 young people from Greece, Croatia, Spain and Germany work on the themes of experiences of discrimination and self-identity in the seven-day workshop using the methods of the performing arts, performance and film (camera work and editing). The results are presented in a performance.
This intensive programme is complemented by a video lecture at the German Dance Film Institute Bremen, in which artistic director Heide-Marie Härtel unfolds the thematic field of DANCE and FILM with the interface of the archive. Artistic dance, documentary film, film art – a broad field is outlined. This will be followed by an intensive exchange about the importance of preserving fleeting artistic moments, as they are found especially in artistic stage dance, through the medium of film.

Since its premiere in 2016, step ensemble piece ZWEI GIRAFFEN TANZEN TANGO – BREMER SCHRITTE, a Tanzfonds Erbe project, has already wowed audiences in many places. Now two adapted versions of Helge Letonja’s take on dance theatre pioneer Gerhard Bohner’s 1980 choreography can be experienced away from home.

 

As part of the TANZLAND WINSEN cooperation, Letonja has combined sequences from the production with the ensemble to create a new multi-layered cosmos: With GEGENPOLE UND ZWISCHENWELTEN the audience can expect contemporary dance art on 12 September in the Stadthalle Winsen, which weaves everyday gestures, subconscious and humorous into impressive moving images.

 

At 7:30 pm, expert Heide-Marie Härtel, director of the German Dance Film Institute Bremen, will introduce the piece and its background.

The Kulturverein Winsen and steptext dance project see their cooperation as an opportunity to bring contemporary dance art closer to different sections of the population and age groups and to create sustainable structures for dance guest performances, dance reflection and dance practice. Steptext, with its productions that address social discourses in terms of dance aesthetics, as well as its networking and mediation skills, meets a committed partner in Winsen that interacts with the city on many levels and is open to new impulses. Dance as an art form that appeals to its audience across all linguistic and age differences increases Winsen’s attractiveness as a new and first-time element in the city’s cultural programme and helps to raise the profile of its cultural programme beyond the city limits.

Jean Cebron DANCE SALON 26: Farewell to Jean Cébron

The dancer, choreographer and teacher Jean Cébron died on 1 February at the age of 94. After Kurt Jooss, he was probably the most influential dance teacher at the Folkwangschule for decades. His students included such well-known dance personalities as Reinhild Hoffmann, Susanne Linke, Urs Dietrich and Lutz Förster.

 

Jean Cébron was active as a dancer, for example in famous ballet pieces by Kurt Jooss, and as a choreographer, performing with Pina Bausch and others in the 1970s. The German Dance Film Institute has previously unpublished video material from Jean Cébron’s classes, from performances at the Folkwangschule in the 1990s and from his work with the Bremer Tanztheater in the 1980s under Reinhild Hoffmann.

We show clips from the filming and talk to one of his students from the 90s, Professor Doktor STEPHAN BRINKMANN, who has been head of the dance department at the Folkwang University of the Arts since late last year.

 

Following the presentation, we are pleased to introduce you to a premiere that will be shown in the Schwankhalle the following week, on 13.3: SCHLAFWANDLER 1999 / 2019. Choreographed by Helge Letonja in 1999, the same dancers continue the piece 20 years later in a second part. Ziv Frenkel and Anne Minetti are present at the Tanzsalon. The annual conference of the IASA-Ländergruppe Deutschland/Schweiz e.V. will take place in cooperation with the Klaus Kuhnke Archive for Popular Music and the Günter Grass Foundation on 23 and 24 November 2018 at the Studienzentrum Künstlerpublikationen / Weserburg and will offer an excursion to the media archive of the Deutsches Tanzfilminstitut Bremen.

 

The conference will focus on the perspectives of institutional archiving of audiovisual media, especially under the aspect of digitisation and long-term archiving of this media genre. This is where the guided tour through the German Dance Film Institute Bremen, especially through the technical department, ties in. We are particularly pleased about the interest shown by colleagues from Switzerland / Memoriav. The tour through our rooms follows the numerous work phases that a medium goes through until it is fully recorded in our extensive dance film archive, the largest in Europe. Multi-layered, time-consuming work processes for digitising video tapes of different formats become visible. Special attention is paid to the possibilities of restoring tapes. The processing of the digitised material, its inclusion in a database individually adapted to the needs of our institute, the indexing of the films and the subsequent long-term digitisation are vividly presented by our staff. The extensive professional exchange with the director Heide-Marie Härtel establishes new connections and concludes the excursion.

Current developments call the socio-political neutrality of museums into question. The annual conference of the German Museums Association in May 2018 will discuss whether or how political museums are today and what values they represent for society. With speakers from Germany and abroad and around 400 conference participants, the annual conference offers a platform to discuss museum-relevant issues and current developments.

As part of the Spring Conference 2018 of the Documentation Section of the German Museums Association, the panel DOCUMENTING MUSEUM COLLECTIONS AND MAKING THEM ACCESSIBLE ONLINE offers a guided tour of all the departments of the German Dance Film Institute dedicated to the long-term digitisation and systematic indexing of films on and about contemporary and classical dance.

 

About 30 conference participants take advantage of this informative offer and receive extensive information from the staff of the various trades. In small groups, they pass through five stations that correspond to the phases of the work process a videotape goes through during digitisation and indexing at the Institute. Heide-Marie Härtel’s presentation of the database, which was custom-made for our needs, attracts special attention. Our TV and video technician, Claus Bouchard, has expertise in the restoration of highly endangered video tapes. He explains how he can rescue problem tapes. The excursion participants receive vivid explanations of the digitisation workflow from the head of the technical department, Hartmut Sebel: “A multitude of work steps – starting with reading in the tape in real time including the levelling of sound and image signals, the packaging of the material, editing work and the long-term saving of the material on special storage media – the creation of a high-quality digitisation of video tapes is time-consuming. With the knowledge of these experts, it is often possible to produce a significantly better digital copy from poor-quality video material. The insight into the user-friendly multimedia tool for using the digitised material on a tablet or smartphone via intranet, including a direct connection to the database, concludes the tour and opens up a lively exchange.

This year’s Festival of Contemporary Theatre and Dance euro-scene Leipzig is themed “Excavations”. One focus is dedicated to the reconstruction of historically important dance pieces and so it comes as no surprise that the reconstruction of Gerhard Bohner’s “Zwei Giraffen tanzen Tango – Bremer Schritte” (original 1980) is on the programme at the Schaubühne Lindenfels on 11 and 12 November 2017. Choreographer Helge Letonja has developed this funded project of the Tanzfonds Erbe – An Initiative of the German Federal Cultural Foundation with steptext dance project, Bremen, based on historical film material about Bohner’s work from the archive of the German Dance Film Institute Bremen.

Scurrile figures and elements of the absurd characterise this dance piece, which Gerhard Bohner, a pioneer of German dance history, created with 10 dancers in Bremen in 1980. 36 years later, choreographer Helge Letonja questions the historical model and opens up new associative spaces. The “steps” of the current production design their forward in the here and now. With the historical pioneering phase of German dance theatre in Bremen as well as tomorrow in mind, Letonja searches for further developments: Bohner’s subjects, the absurd, the relationships between individuals and stereotypes, the living and the dead, the figure of art and the human being – how do they dance today?

 

30 minutes before each performance, Heide-Marie Härtel, Deutsches Tanzfilminstitut Bremen, and Helge Letonja, steptext dance project Bremen, will give an introduction in joint conversation with a wealth of unique, historical, previously unpublished film excerpts of Bohner’s piece.

Since the days of expressive dance, the “supreme discipline” of solo dance has repeatedly had a style-defining effect on the development of modern dance in Germany. Greats such as Mary Wigman, Gret Palucca, Harald Kreutzberg or later Dore Hoyer represented the whole range of New Artistic Dance, as expressive dance was also called, in their solo works. Flexible and usually without an elaborate stage set, the soloists gave their performances not only in large theatres, but also on numerous concert and podium stages, thus ensuring wide dissemination. Also the new

generation that sought new forms of expression from the sixties onwards often formulated themselves first in solo works. Susanne Linke, Reinhild Hoffmann and Gerhard Bohner caused a sensation with solo evenings. In the next generation of choreographers, the aesthetic range goes from Anna Huber to Richard Siegal. But the Bremen independent scene also plays a good role. Let yourself / be surprised.

Correspondences between Contemporary Dance in Germany and the
Judson Dance Theater Movement in the USA (Preview)
A week-long symposium took place at the Tanzhaus Düsseldorf in mid-2014, which focused on the influence of America’s dance revolution in the 1960s on dance history in Germany. In a total of 60 different events (workshops, round-table discussions / performances etc.), still active contemporary witnesses, dance scholars and performers of today worked on this topic across generations and genres. The dance revolution promoted and created a wealth of new movement techniques and cross-disciplinary forms of choreography, which have found their way into the independent scene as well as into established dance institutions.

The film is an example of this.

The filmic examination of the project is almost complete. A one-hour version is available. In the course of 2016, the film will be enriched with historical visual examples in close cooperation with the project leaders from Germany and the USA. The premiere of the final version will be in June 2016 at the invitation of the 4th Dance Congress

The choreographer Trisha Brown was one of the co-founders of the Judson Dance movement. Her famous company toured Europe for the last time (before closing) in 2014. Commissioned by the Akademie der Künste Berlin, the
German Dance Film Institute recorded this guest performance in Berlin. In Tanzsalon 02 we show parts of this recording with older, but also newer pieces by the style-defining
choreographer.

In the spring of 2015, in the context of the TanzBremen festival, all the dance actors in the city came together with the desire to network anew and work together for dance in Bremen. Dancers, choreographers, dance schools and dance centres from the steptext dance project to many individual professionals in the independent dance sector, in dance and school projects as well as almost all dance schools in the city want to explore new fields of action in the city and reposition them in the cultural-political context.

On the 10th of each month, individual dance actors or dance institutions present their current projects at the German Dance Film Institute between 20-21:30. These smaller-scale events aim to show the city’s dance fans the diversity of activities in the field of dance and to present the close links between dance art, dance education, dance in schools and the dance archive. And give them the opportunity to meet the artists and dance educators in person.

We invite you. Come to our 1st event to learn more about dance in our city in a convivial atmosphere. We will start on 10.12.2015 with a presentation of the latest dance development in our city: the TanzKollektivBremen, which has already provided a new “dance colour” in the city with its very successful performances in the last two years.

Tomas Bünger reports on his experiences as a guest lecturer at the University of the Arts in Buenos Aires and in Dhaka,/ Bangladesh, where he has already given several workshops on contemporary dance at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut.

The TanzKollektivBremen is a platform of former dancers from the Bremer Tanztheater/ Urs Dietrich. The initiators are Tomas Bünger, Miroslaw Żydowicz and Magali Sander Fett. All participants are active in the various fields of contemporary dance: as dancers, as choreographers, as teachers. The platform serves networking and cooperation and is open to guests. Joint projects as well as individual projects are realised from here. Two productions have already been shown in 2014: “Corvus – Second Nature” (at the Bremen Theatre) and “Street Art Project – Allowed to play” (at the Schwankhalle). The production “Schweres Wasser” will have its premiere at the Schwankhalle on 4 December.

On the basis of now historical film clips from the 1980s to today’s dance performances,impuls presents its dance works from the amateur groups and training groups. Numerous well-known dancers, dance teachers and choreographers have gone through the training of impuls. In addition, freelance choreographers have taught or created dance pieces in a wide variety of groups. Only a small sample of the 30 years can be shown.

 

About impuls
Founded in 1984 – had the idea to bring together amateurs and professional dance makers. In addition to courses in dance improvisation, modern dance, various workshops, the 1st “Bremer Tanzherbst” was created in 1988. At first it was studio performances and events in small theatres, until Hans Diers established the connection with the Bremen Theatre. In 1999 the association “TANZ Bremen” was founded. In 1990 impuls was able to create appropriate dance spaces in a former clothing factory. In 1993 the first year of training to become a gymnastics and dance teacher with a focus on movement therapy began. In 2007, the vocational school for gymnastics, dance and sports was opened.
In 2013, a new dance room was created in the former Hemelingen town hall, which can also be used as an event space for small groups.

impuls made a name for itself with its intergenerational, inclusive dance performances as well as dance graduations from the training courses. The combination of culture, education and health is the basis for all the work.

The videolecture with Heide-Marie Härtel and the Hamburg author opens up access to the historical source material of Josep Caballero Garcia’s piece “NO (`RAIT) OF SPRING” with film examples from the German Dance Film Institute Bremen.

Dance and film,- two genres that at first glance could not be more different. Dance in its immanent fleetingness meets film with its ever increasing independence from the material. Both develop their own creative scope, but also use each other’s creative methods. They meet most directly in dance documentation, in video dance and on the media-designed stage. The internet as a global text and image repository offers a new background for dance knowledge and dance creations at the same time.

In six individual lessons, the seminar explores the contact surfaces between dance and film and takes a look at the mutual influences in formal working methods and format developments. Learning to see dance is also a question of media competence in view of the increasingly media-mediated ways of reception.

This seminar aims to intensify German-Brazilian contacts in the northeast of Brazil through the dance academy of the Federal University. Founded in 1956, the institution, whose teaching style is European or primarily German, is considered a pioneer in Latin America and is developing into an academic training institution for dance, offering Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. The aim of the event is to promote exchange between German and Brazilian artists and academics and thus to strengthen their international cooperation through lectures, film screenings, performances.
