Schritte, die wir schon gegangen sind, Schritte, die wir jetzt gehen – sie werden morgen ein Bestandteil unserer Erinnerung sein.

Der Erinnerungsprozess steht in Ziv Frenkels Choreografie „encoding decoding“ im Mittelpunkt der Performance. Frenkel begreift das Erinnern als Encoding, das Abrufen der Erinnerung als Decoding. Der Akt des Gehens wird zum Ausgangspunkt der Choreografie und übersetzt das Erinnern in einen körperlichen Prozess. Die Schritte sind Sinnbild für die ewige Bewegung nach vorne in Richtung einer Zukunft, die ohne die Vergangenheit, die vorangegangenen Schritte nicht denkbar ist.

Das Gehen, gekoppelt mit der Erinnerung und dem Reproduzieren von Erinnerung auf dem Weg in die Zukunft, formt so einen Kreislauf, der als ein immerwährendes Ritual gelesen werden kann.

Mit „encoding decoding“ bezieht sich der aus Israel stammende Tänzer Ziv Frenkel auf die Filminstallation „1001 Lights“ von Mouvement Perpétuel Montréal und schafft einen Resonanzraum in intensiver, persönlicher Auseinandersetzung mit einem prägnanten Teil der jüdischen Kultur: Im Zentrum der Filminstallation steht das wöchentliche Ritual des Kerze Entzündens zum Schabbat, das im jüdischen religiösen Alltag den Frauen obliegt. Ein Moment der Besinnung um Raum für Neues zu schaffen.


Für „encoding decoding“ kollaboriert Ziv Frenkel mit dem Musiker und Sounddesigner Florian Tippe.

In “encoding decoding”, the dancer and choreographer Ziv Frenkel enters into dialogue with the work 1001 lights by Marlene Millar and Philip Szporer.

“encoding decoding” deals with the complex connection between present experience, the act of generating memory as well as the act of remembering itself. The focus of Frenkel’s work is on mechanisms of the process of remembering and the image that both past and present life is an essential part of future memories.

Steps of the remembrance process can be described as Encoding and Decoding. Encoding refers to the process of transforming what is perceived and experienced into a form that makes it possible for the individual to remember it. The experienced can be recalled or decoded at a later point in time and can thus be re- experienced. The weekly repetitive ritual of Shabbat evening prayer with its physical and sensual experience can also be transformed and encoded into a memory. This sensual experience can be recalled in the memory at any time, yet it changes constantly depending on when, how and where one remembers. Thus, the act of remembering creates a complex network of connections between past, present and future.

The choreographic starting point for “encoding decoding” is the act of walking – one step forward follows the next. This step forward is for a brief moment not only part of the present, but also symbolises the endless movement forward towards an inevitable future. A step into a future that is waiting to become part of the present and immediately thereafter part of a past – steps that leave a past behind as they move one from the present into the future, always bearing within them the potential to become part of future memories.

For “encoding decoding”, Ziv Frenkel collaborates with musician and sound designer Florian Tippe, who for the sound design will work with live recordings from the installation space.
